Character's Decisions

Michelle Obama once said "Don’t ever make decisions based on fear. Make decisions based on hope and possibility. Make decisions based on what should happen, not what shouldn’t. We make decisions based on experience. In the book "The Giver" by Lois Lowry, decisions are essential for the progress of the story. The book talks about a Utopia where bad actions are punished very hardly, so, they make their decisions depending on their terrors like Rosemary or on their hopes like Jonas.

Rosemary made a terrible decision that affected many people in the community. She is the giver's daughter and the last receiver. Her bad decision was led because of her fears, she have gotten some painful memories from her father and she couldn't resist, so, she applied for release. I think it was an unfavorable decision, the memories she contained were all transmitted to the people form the community and since they didn't were used to feel pain, it was a caos. That is why in the rules of the next receiver, there was the rule of not being able to apply for release. Also, her decision affected the giver who loved her too much, now he wants to die to be with her. Therefore, I don't agree with what she did, she based her decision on fears, not on hopes.

Instead, Jonas made a pretty good decision. He is the actual receiver, and he has gained wisdom throughout his hard training. His decision was based on his hopes, not like Rosemary. He wants to do a favor to all the community, he risks his life in order for their sake, he wants the people to remember all good things about life. He even saved Gabriel, he was going to be released (killed) just because he couldn't sleep soundly and because his little underdevelopment. I think Jonas would help really much his community by giving them all his memories and, with the help of the giver, the community will be normal and will feel again.  Therefore, I agree with what he did, he thought about others' good being really brave and basing his decision on good hopes.

In conclusion, people's decisions affect in either a positive or negative way to all people around. Decisions should be taken like Jonas, with hopes of good things, and not like Rosemary, depending on fears and not thinking about other people's life.
